Sheet Masks: Everything You Need To Know

You can scroll your social media feed and see faces covered in white or gold sheet-like masks for only so long before you have to know the scoop.

The masks you see on virtually everyone’s faces are called sheet masks, and they’re the latest way to give yourself a spa-like experience right in your own home.

Sheet masks are convenient, easy, and packed with ingredients that your skin will love, especially during those “bumpy” days where you're prone to breaking out due to your monthly cycle. The good news is, we offer sheet masks that target specific skin concerns, especially during this time!

Ready to get healthier skin and post your own #sheetmaskselfie? Grab your favorite robe, a steamy cup of herbal tea, and let’s unwind as we go over everything you need to know about your soon-to-be favorite obsession.

What Are Sheet Masks?

Sheet masks are thin, disposable masks made from lightweight materials such as cotton or bamboo. They’re infused with different ingredients depending on what skin concern they’re targeting.

When you remove a sheet mask from its packaging, you’ll notice it is saturated with the mask ingredients (plant botanicals, hydrating extracts, and natural oils).

You’ll usually wear a sheet mask no longer than twenty minutes, which makes it convenient to treat your skin to a little pick me up at any point in your day. They’re perfect additions to your morning or evening skin care routine.

Sheet masks cover your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin and have cutouts for your eyes, nostrils, and mouth. Once they’ve been applied, they’re comfortable and remove easily.

How Do Sheet Masks Work?

Sheet masks work by delivering a potent blend of ingredients to your skin through the use of saturated material. When you apply the sheet mask to your skin, the ingredients in the mask transfer to your skin and dive deep into your pores.

The outer layer of the sheet masks protects your skin from external stressors, moisture and ingredient loss while the mask is on your face.

When you remove the sheet mask, your skin is hydrated, healthy, and refreshed. Your sheet mask will only stay on your face for a short period of time, which means the mask shouldn’t dry out completely.

Which Sheet Mask Is Right for Me?

The beauty of sheet masks is that they target specific skin issues. You can use a different mask based on your skin needs at the time, so having a variety of masks on hand is a smart decision.

We know your skin care needs change during the course of your monthly cycle. Your skin experiences some pretty big moods, and we have a mask designed to help you embrace each phase of your cycle and the changes it brings to your skin.

Hydration Masks

The first few days of your period, your skin can be really dry and sensitive. Thanks to dipping levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen, skin will naturally need more hydration during this time of your cycle.

The solution: A hydration sheet mask. Hydration masks are the perfect way to deliver added moisture when your skin needs it most.

Our bamboo hydration sheet masks are saturated with hydrating pineapple extract, clarifying orange fruit extract, and skin plumping rose extract to keep your skin smooth, supple, and fully moisturized, no matter what your hormones are doing.

Tea Tree Oil Masks

The week before your period can be a roller coaster for your hormones, with levels dipping and peaking in the matter of a few days. What does this mean for your skin? Increased levels of your skin’s natural oil, sebum.

Hormone changes prior to your period can send signals to your sebaceous glands to charge full speed ahead. Skin can become oily, pores can become clogged, and breakouts can seem unavoidable.

The solution: Tea tree oil sheet masks. Tea tree oil is an excellent antibacterial ingredient that helps keep your skin healthy and encourages balanced moisture. Rael’s tea tree oil masks also include soothing cica extract and calming chamomile. Think of it as a nice glass of wine for your skin.

Vitamin C Masks

You’ve finished your period and think you (and your skin) are in the clear, but a week later, your skin looks dull and tired. That’s because, after ovulation, estrogen levels dip, leaving your skin a little drier and less able to maintain adequate moisture and radiance.

The solution: Vitamin C sheet masks. Vitamin C is nature’s best skin brightening ingredient. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, which means it can help protect your skin against external stressors and help restore it to radiance.

Rael’s Vitamin C sheet masks are infused with three different fruit extracts. Apply this mask when you need a skin pick-me-up and watch your natural glow return in just a matter of minutes.

Collagen Sheet Masks

Post-period is a great time for a little self-care, and nothing does the job better than a collagen sheet mask. Collagen is the basic building block of skin that helps keep it plump and youthful.

As you get older, collagen production begins to slow, which can cause fine lines and wrinkles to form.

The solution: Collagen sheet masks. Fight the signs of aging and stop the clock with Rael’s collagen-infused sheet masks. These masks help reduce the visible signs of aging and give your skin a deeply hydrated, refreshed feel.

Infused with hydrolyzed collagen, hydrating wheat amino acids, and soothing licorice root, our collagen masks might have you believing in the fountain of youth.

Sheet Mask Tips and Tricks

Although sheet masks are very easy to use, there are some tips and tricks that can help your entire experience go smoothly.

Wash Your Face Before Applying

The ingredients of your sheet mask most closely resemble a serum. They’re a potent blend of hydrating and nourishing ingredients that penetrate the skin deeply.

If your face isn’t clean before you apply the sheet mask, the ingredients will have a hard time digging deep into your pores.

Wash your face before you apply a sheet mask and pat it dry with a towel. Use your sheet mask before you apply any additional serums, moisturizers, or treatments. This allows the sheet mask ingredients to penetrate fully without interference from other products.

Don’t Leave Them On Too Long

It can be tempting to leave a sheet mask on for longer than twenty minutes, but this isn’t a great idea. Sheet masks contain a powerful, concentrated blend of botanicals and extracts. These ingredients are beneficial for your skin, but leaving a sheet mask on longer than twenty minutes could cause irritation.

If you allow a sheet mask to dry on your skin, you could even experience difficulty removing it. The best way to ensure you use it properly is to remove a sheet mask after it has been on your face for no more than twenty minutes.

Don’t Wash Your Face After Use

When you remove your sheet mask, there may be residue from the mask left on the surface of your skin. Don’t wash it off! Instead, use your fingertips to gently massage it into your skin, so you get the total benefit of the mask ingredients.

Once your skin is dry, it is safe to apply the remainder of your skin care products like moisturizer or serum.

Get Zen

If you really want to treat yourself to a spa-like experience, try cooling your sheet mask in the refrigerator for a few minutes prior to application.  This can create an all-over cooling effect on your skin and help deflate bags under your eyes or any other irritation you might be experiencing.

We also highly recommend disconnecting from the world for that twenty minutes (after you post your selfie, of course).
